Postpartum Support Philosophy

Supporting a woman through her journey from Maiden to Mother is a hugely under-resourced area of pregnancy and early childhood care. In ways, it feels like this vast and isolated minefield of hormonal shifts, physical and emotional recovery, on-the-job training as a new parent, and sitz baths. It’s the misty no-mans-land between the glory of pregnancy and the bliss of a new baby. So often, it isn’t talked about at all. And worse still, in our modern culture, the speed at which a woman “bounces back” after giving birth is celebrated as a badge of honor.

After I gave birth to my son, the importance of a well-supported postpartum period became super clear to me. I was lucky. My support circle and I had prepped tons of food ahead of time, we got two deep freezers set up in the basement and were well-stocked as I went into my “fourth trimester” But there were still things that I didn’t know I needed to prep for. How do you adequately prepare for something you’ve never done before? You lean on the experience of others and the wisdom of your village. You open yourself up to the ability to receive nourishment and care.

We have lost sight of the fact that we were never meant to enter this phase of life alone. Across history and across cultures there are numerous examples of “fourth-trimester” periods lasting 20, 30 even 60 days or longer where a woman is held and cared for by her community as she adjusts to her new role as Mother. What would it feel like to be truly held as you enter this period of transition and recovery?

I walk with women as they navigate this new landscape. Together we work through the logistics of your unique postpartum plan, identify and empower the members of your village with the tools they need to be able to show up and support you during this shift, and discuss and unpack the layered and nuanced changes that take place during this profound time of transition. This work is individually structured to meet each woman where she is.
